Casement & Awning

According to dictionary.com the definition of a casement window is: a window sash opening on hinges that are generally attached to the upright side of its frame.

For Bergerson we have multiple hinging options on this type of window, both bar hinges and butt hinges.  The most important thing to remember is that a casement window has it’s axis point on either the left or right side, giving it a horizontal swing direction.

According to dictionary.com the definition of an awning window is: a window frame having one or more sashes hinged at the top and swinging outward.

As with our casement window, the awning too has different options for hinging.  Please note that an awning window has it’s axis point toward the head (top) of each sash no matter what hinging method is used.

Bergerson has divided the casements and awnings into three groups:

Horizontal

Our Horizontal Series includes most of our outswing styled casements and awnings.  We have named it horizontal because of their natural horizontal flow.  The design allows for multiple sash to be added horizontally while maintaining straight daylight lines.  Whether fixed or operating the sash lines remain straight and consistent.  This series includes single sash units, french casements, and the gangning of multiple units, along with a variety of hardware options.  Please follow the links to view examples from our Horizontal Series.

Vertical

Our Vertical Series is a more specialized style of casement and awning.  This series is called this because sash are added vertically within the same set of window jambs.  Like all of our window groups we maintain straight daylight lines.  The vertical windows are designed to line up vertically in the jambs, or even horizontally when two units are placed side by side.  Whether casement or awning, fixed or operating, and with any number of sash (whithin an allowable size), many different combinations of vertical windows are available.  Like it’s horizontal cousin these too come with a variety of hardware options.

Inswing

Our Inswing Series of window is based on the old European/Mediterranian style of window.  Most commonly used in a thick wall masonry application, our inswing series window is also best equipped with functioning shutters.  Usually built in a french or “XX” configuration the inswing casement window can really help to complete to look and feel of your Southern European styled project.  As one architect that we spoke to put it, the right inswing casement is the “Holy Grail” of windows.

Is there an inswing awning? Well we do make a hopper window which swings in, but is hinged from the bottom instead of the top.  For more information please see our specialty window section on the website for more on the Hopper Window.
